Today marks exactly one month since, SatCom sponsored, 16 year old Jessica Watson sailed out of Sydney Heads on 18 October 2009. Jessica is attempting to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe, non-stop and unassisted. The equator is now within her sights.
Jessica passed the 3000 nautical mile (nm) mark on Monday and is still averaging approximately 5 knots. She is now within 50nm of crossing the equator and is expected to cross the line and into the northern hemisphere at some stage on Thursday morning (AEDT), dependant on weather conditions over the next 24 hours.
“We’ve had a great day and I’m pleased to report the equator is only 50 nautical miles away now. This should see us crossing the line at some stage tomorrow morning which is pretty exciting,” said Jessica this evening via satellite phone.
This is a significant milestone of her journey. She is genuinely excited about the upcoming landmark and plans to celebrate it in classic Jessica-style.
“It’s hard to believe Ella’s Pink Lady & I are so close to the equator now. Everyone has been asking me what I am planning to do to celebrate the occasion. Well it would only be fitting to cook up a pink dessert of some sort to mark the moment, so more on that one soon in the blog,” said a buoyant Jessica this morning.
Jessica also has a new friend onboard that she has nicknamed 'Silly'. He is a little brown sea bird that has been keeping her company by perching on the Inmarsat FleetBroadband SAILOR 250 antenna on the stern of the boat. He's been with Jessica for a few hours and has made himself quite comfortable on his new surroundings!
